Swatch Buddies – A girls best friend!

The past May I got the fun (kidless) joy of going to the Portland Spring Quilt Market.  While there I came upon the coolest sewing idea I have ever seen, SWATCH BADDIES!  Upon getting to play with these super cool cards I immediately had ideas going through my head on how to use them with my sewing business.

Swatch Buddies are 1″ x 2″ hard plastic cards with a hole punched in one end.  You use their double sided adhesive tape (which is AWSEOME!) and stick it to back of your fabric.  Trim around the tape with pinking shears, peal off the back and stick to your card.  The Swatch Buddies also come with stickers for the back of the cards that make it easy to label your card with yardage, fabric name, and store you bought it at.

The Swatch Buddies are ideal for bringing fabrics for projects to the store with you to be able to color match.  Ensuring you never buy the wrong color again!  I personally am using Swatch Buddies to bring samples of all of my fabrics to the local farmers market with me.

For more info on purchasing yourself some Swatch Buddies go to http://www.swatchbuddies.com/servlet/StoreFront

Now for some pictures, I will have many more pictures to come later but this is just a teaser :p

As many of you know I am a cloth diaper maker.  The above sample is JUST of my cotton velour colors.  I still have a lot more swatch buddies to make!

Why ruler folding is worth it

So a while back I did a post on how to ruler fold wide fabrics.  And now I am going to show you how all of that folding will pay off.  My husband is in the process of finishing up my very own craft room.  It is to the point now where I can actually put my fabric up on my beautiful new wall to wall shelfing!  And since I have been prepping for this day for the last 5 months, when he finally got my shelves up I had all my fabric up and pretty within a day!  If you want to know how to fold them like this please go here

And needless to say I LOVE my new craft room and cant wait to move the rest of my stuff back in!

How to Ruler Fold Wide Fabrics

There is an awesome tutorial here on how to ruler fold quilting cottons. But if you are like me and have lots of fabrics that are 60″ or more inches wide (not 44″ like quilting cottons) you have to figure out how to make it work. I promise its easy!

First up lay your fabric out nice and flat. This is a 70″ wide fabric and is 2 yards long. I have the 2 yard length left to right in this picture.

Fold the edge closest to you up 1/3 of the width of the fabric

Now fold the top down the other 1/3 of the width of the fabric

Now you can ruler fold. Lay your ruler on the end of your fabric. I like a 6″ ruler for my fabric but you may find a different size works better for your shelfing than the 6″

Fold the end over your ruler

Now keep rolling your ruler until you have almost all the fabric rolled up

It should look something like this

If you are like me and want it really neat you will fold the end in like this

Fold over the rest of the way

Slide your ruler out

Now fold your long log of fabric in half. This is a side view. This is a thick fabric so yours will likely end up thinner.

And this is what you will see from the front

There ya go! You just ruler folded a cut of wide fabric!
